Profile

Mrs. Lizzie W. Chiwaula holds a Master’s Degree in International studies focusing on Education development and Management obtained from the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University, Japan in 2008 and a Bachelor’s degree in Education with credit from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College in 1999. Before joining the Department of Higher Education and Professional Development, she had been working as a Research Fellow at the University of Malawi’s Centre for Educational Research and Training (CERT) for 18 years. While working as a research Fellow, she also held the position of Acting Deputy Director for CERT between 2012 and 2014. She has vast experience in designing and conducting both quantitative and qualitative research and consultancy projects in education working with different international and local organizations, international institutions of higher learning such as University of Stirling, University Sussex and University of London of the UK and Hiroshima University. In higher education, her research focused on the evaluation of World Banks’ skills development project in Malawi and access to higher education through diploma programs. In primary and secondary education, she has conducted evaluations of education interventions on the National Numeracy programme, National Reading programme, Child Friendly schooling, school meals programme, Nutrition and access to primary school and other research on Education and Covid-19, Inclusive education, school dropout, school grants, pupil absenteeism, Learner Cantered Education (LCE), Monitoring Learning Achievements, and Girls education among others. She has also worked as a World Bank Short-Term Education consultant in different projects including the Malawi Education Sector Improvement Project (MESIP) and Equity and Quality Learning at Secondary Education (EQUALS) projects in 2017/18. She has also worked as a World Bank research consultant the for the higher education skills development and the Malawi Public Expenditure Review. She is currently a member of the National Committee on Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities (NCRSH), under the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) and also member of the board of trustees for a local Non-Governmental Organization called Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM).
