About the school

The School of Arts, Communication and Design is the newest amongst the five schools that have been established at the new University of Malawi, after the unbundling of the old University of Malawi which comprised of Chancellor College, Kamuzu College of Medicine, Kamuzu College of Nursing and the Polytechnic. With a challenge to make Arts, Communication and Design a leading school nationally, continentally, and globally, the school envisions to place Malawian arts, communication and artistic design on the global map by the end of ten years. Housing Theatre and Drama, Music and Dance, Art and Design, Fashion and Design, Film and Photography, Media and Communication Studies, Entrepreneurship and Creative Industries, the school is bent to produce artists, art work, communicators, and entrepreneurs, in line with the nation’s development agenda, and the regional and continental needs in the disciplines that constitute it. Offering demand-driven and relevant programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s, Honours, Master’s and Doctoral studies level, it has challenged itself to impact at artistic, craftmanship, technical, entrepreneurial, academic, scholarly and developmental levels. Boasting young and vibrant faculty in the different areas, it includes internationally acclaimed academics and practitioners.

An Associate Professor of Drama and Development Media at the University of Malawi, and Deputy Chief Editor of Journal of Humanities, Dr Mufunanji Magalasi has published a monograph, Stage Drama in Independent Malawi, and edited Beyond the Barricades: a collection of contemporary Malawian plays.
