More and detailed information about the department to be available on its upcoming official department website.
Sociology became a department in 1980. Its mission is to provide and sustain high quality teaching and research, train and produce graduates that are capable of applying sociological knowledge to the understanding of societal problems and making a positive contribution to national development.
The department has three streams of degree courses namely:
The aim of the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology programme is to equip students with relevant knowledge and competencies in theory that will enable them to analyse social behaviour in various contexts.
The Bachelor of Social Science in Social Work programme aims to equip students with relevant knowledge, skills, values, ethics and competencies in theories, principles and concepts that govern the social work profession. The programme is designed to produce human resources in social work for public, non-governmental and private sector institutions.
Finally, the Bachelor of Social Science in Gender Studies programme aims to increase capacity among students for rigorous gender analysis and to promote awareness of its relevance in economic, historical, political, social and scientific contexts.
The Sociology Department also offers the Master of Arts in Sociology.
